She froze, one paw in the air, and sniffed intently, sorting out the various smells of the night. Rain-soaked dirt, damp foliage, a recently deceased earthworm - her wet black nose twitched, seeking the answer to the mystery in the hedgerow. Could it be Llewellyn? Had he followed her all the way from the secret meeting? Which of her fellow conspirators might have betrayed her to him? She knew it was possible, and yet there was a smell in the air she could not identify: a peculiar mixture of newly-sharpened pencils and bacon. Suddenly, a bark rang out!
